The research
Scientists at Houston Methodist, led by Dr. Stephen Wong and Dr. Li Yang, identified a class of fat molecules called phosphatidylethanolamines (PEs) as a key link. In a study published in Molecular Neurodegeneration (July 2026), they found that obesity increases PE levels in body tissue. These fats are then packed into tiny particles that travel through the bloodstream to the brain.
Once in the brain, these particles disrupt communication between brain cells, weaken immune protection, and encourage amyloid proteins to clump together—a hallmark of Alzheimer's. When the researchers restored a healthy PE balance in Alzheimer's models, they observed improved cognitive performance, including learning and memory.
The study was funded by the Cure Alzheimer's Fund and involved collaborators from several institutions. Over 6.5 million Americans currently live with Alzheimer's, a number expected to rise to nearly 14 million by 2060, according to the CDC.
