AI Speech Analysis Predicts Teen Mental Health Risks

Natural language processing (NLP) models that analyze how children talk about stressful events can predict future mental health problems more accurately than human experts, according to a new study.

The Research

Researchers at Stanford University, led by Chase Antonacci and Professor Ian Gotlib, published findings in Nature Mental Health. They used four NLP algorithms to evaluate audio-recorded interviews of over 200 children aged 9 to 13. The children discussed stressful life events, and the models analyzed their speech patterns. Six years later, these models accurately predicted which children developed mental health conditions, outperforming a panel of clinical experts who used standard assessments.

Critically, the style of speech—how children used function words like conjunctions, prepositions, and pronouns—was more predictive than the content of what they said. The researchers transformed low-cost, non-invasive speech recordings into predictive biomarkers, offering a scalable way to identify risk years before symptoms appear.

Traditional risk assessment methods, such as cortisol measurements or telomere length, are invasive or costly. Speech analysis is simple, accessible, and potentially more powerful.
