Why Positive Reinforcement Can Trap Ideas in a 'Death Spiral'

Sticking with familiar ideas might feel safe, but new research shows it can actually trap thoughts and behaviors in tight feedback loops, preventing them from spreading across the brain or social networks.

The Research

Physicists at Northwestern University, led by assistant professor István Kovács, developed a new theoretical framework that incorporates Hebbian learning — the principle that 'neurons that fire together, wire together' — into models of network activity. Traditionally, network models assume connections between nodes (representing people, neurons, or animals) remain static. But Kovács and his team allowed connections to strengthen or weaken based on activity, mimicking real-world learning.

In the study, published April 27 in Communications Physics, the team simulated activity spreading through networks with positive reinforcement (strengthening connections) and negative reinforcement (weakening connections). Surprisingly, they found that positive reinforcement actually impedes spreading: activity gets trapped in loops, repeatedly activating the same nodes, much like ants following pheromone trails until they die of exhaustion — a phenomenon known as the 'ant mill effect.'

Conversely, when connections weakened, activity was forced to explore new paths, allowing it to spread much more efficiently. 'We found that positive incentives can strengthen existing connections, which prevents activity from spreading,' Kovács said. 'When connections weaken, the system avoids old paths and can lead to more efficient spreading.' The model applies broadly — from social media echo chambers to viral infections to signal propagation in the brain.

Why It Matters for Your Brain

Your brain constantly adapts through Hebbian learning. When you repeatedly think or behave in a certain way, those neural pathways strengthen, making those patterns more likely to recur. While this is essential for forming memories and skills, it also creates 'grooves' that can trap you in rigid thinking. The research suggests that to keep your mind flexible and open to new ideas, you may need to intentionally weaken old patterns — by seeking novelty, questioning assumptions, and letting go of habits that no longer serve you.

What You Can Do

To avoid your own mental 'ant mills,' make a habit of exploring fresh perspectives. Read outside your favorite topics, have conversations with people who disagree with you, and take on challenges that push you off familiar paths. Just as the model shows, weakening old connections allows your brain to form new ones, keeping your thinking flexible and adaptive.
