The Research
In two recent reviews published in The Journal of Neuroscience and Nature Neuroscience, researchers including Christine Grienberger of Brandeis University and Attila Losonczy of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center described BTSP. Unlike the classic rule 'neurons that fire together, wire together,' which operates on millisecond timescales, BTSP works over several seconds. It involves a broad electrical change in the hippocampus, the brain's memory hub, that can strengthen connections across many neurons at once.
The discovery builds on decades of work. For much of neuroscience's history, the adult brain was thought to be fixed, as Santiago Ramón y Cajal wrote in 1928. But case studies show remarkable plasticity: a patient born without an olfactory bulb can still smell, and a person who had half their brain removed as a child leads a functional life. BTSP adds a new layer, showing how the hippocampus can form a memory in one try.
Daniel Dombeck, a neuroscientist at Northwestern University, called BTSP 'a strong, powerful mechanism that can lead to immediate memory formation.' This type of learning may underpin everyday moments when you remember something after only one exposure.
Why It Matters
Understanding BTSP helps explain why some experiences stick while others fade. It suggests your brain is constantly updating based on significant events, not just repetitive practice. This has practical implications for learning: if you want to remember something, make it salient—focus deeply, connect it to emotion, or link it to something you already know.
