In a new study from arXiv, researchers at the Chinese University of Hong Kong have developed a groundbreaking method to analyze how people make decisions in verbal tasks—by looking at the very words they speak. This approach, called the Factorized Inverse Decision Model (FIDM), breaks down task performance into two separate factors: the actions taken and the effort expended (reflected in verbal production, interaction, and hesitation). On data from 400 older adults performing a grocery-shopping dialog task, FIDM not only estimated these factors individually but also improved cognitive-status classification when combined with existing measures.
The Research
Jiawen Kang and colleagues from the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with advisor Helen Meng, proposed FIDM in a paper posted on arXiv in August 2026. They analyzed transcripts of a spoken grocery-shopping task used for cognitive screening, where participants asked for items and received responses. A language model converted raw transcripts into structured traces, allowing the model to estimate separate parameters for action and effort. In controlled recovery tests, FIDM selectively recovered the intended factors, and in matched semi-synthetic conditions, it distinguished action-execution differences even when overall behavioral summaries were identical. This means FIDM captures subtle dynamics that simple aggregate measures miss, such as where in the conversation a participant deviates from the task.
