Could a common seafood hold the key to reversing cognitive aging? A new study suggests that a compound found in sea squirts may help rejuvenate aging brains, at least in mice.
The Research
Scientists from Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, Stanford University, and other institutions investigated the effects of plasmalogens—molecules abundant in brain cell membranes—on aged mice. These lipid levels naturally decline with age, and their reduction is linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.
In the study, published in a recent ScienceDaily report, researchers added plasmalogen supplements to the diets of aged mice. After training in the Morris water maze, a standard test for learning and memory, the treated mice found the hidden platform significantly faster than untreated aged mice, performing nearly as well as younger animals.
When examining the mice's brains, the team observed that those given plasmalogens had more synapses and healthier connections between nerve cells. Lead researcher Professor Lei Fu explained, 'Our research suggests that plasmalogens may not just stop cognitive decline, but may reverse cognitive impairments in the aging brain.' Notably, the treated mice also grew new, thicker, darker hair, indicating a visible reversal of physical aging signs.
