Father's Pre-Conception Drinking Damages Offspring Mitochondria

The researchers hypothesize that alcohol-induced cellular stress alters molecular signaling arrays in sperm, effectively passing down a blueprint for dysfunctional mitochondria. This leaves offspring starting life at a bioenergetic deficit and experiencing accelerated physical decline. Their 'flat tire' hypothesis suggests that paternal alcohol exposure impairs the energy system from the start.

A major part of this phase is evaluating cross-parent interaction: does dad's drinking compound with mom's drinking to worsen birth defects, growth restrictions, and long-term health outcomes? The team is analyzing this dual-parent scenario, which could redefine how we understand Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

Golding’s work extends beyond alcohol — by identifying the non-genetic biomarkers that transmit these effects, the lab aims to develop early-warning tools and targeted interventions for those affected.
