MRI Confirms 150-Year-Old Brain Fold Mystery, Ties It to Womb Environment

An international team has confirmed a 150-year-old anatomical hypothesis: a rare surface 'bridge' across the brain's central fissure occurs in about 0.8% of people and is an extension of normal deep brain folds.

The research

In 1856, Göttingen anatomist Rudolf Wagner noticed an unusual connection above the central fissure — the groove separating the frontal and parietal lobes — while examining a brain he believed belonged to mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss. Twenty years later, Viennese anatomist Richard Heschl searched more than 1,000 post-mortem brains and found the bridge in just six cases (0.6%). He hypothesized it was a normal deep-lying fold that occasionally grew high enough to reach the surface.

Now, researchers from the German Primate Center (DPZ) and the University of Göttingen, led by Renate Schweizer, have replicated Heschl's findings using ultra-high-resolution MRI. Analyzing 1,112 healthy adults from the Human Connectome Project, they found 9 cases of the bridge — a prevalence of 0.8%, closely matching Heschl's 0.6%. Using 3D surface reconstructions, they confirmed the bridge is indeed an upward extension of a deep fold.

The study, published in Brain Structure and Function, earned Schweizer, Anna M. Müllen, and Julius Stropel the Replication Prize from the Organization for Human Brain Mapping. A surprising twin finding emerged: the bridge appeared in 1.8% of fraternal twins and 1.1% of identical twins — higher than the general rate. Because it typically appeared in only one twin of a pair, the team concluded it is not genetically determined but shaped by early environmental factors in the womb, such as space constraints or micro-stressors.

Notably, the original 1856 brain belonged not to Gauss but to physician C. H. Fuchs — a mix-up uncovered in 2013 by Schweizer precisely because of the unique bridge.
