Bilingual brains store concepts on one shared semantic map in the hippocampus, using separate clusters of language-specific neurons to read that map in English or Spanish, according to a study published June 24 in the journal Cell.
The research
First author Xinyuan Yan and colleagues at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston worked with four English-Spanish bilinguals who had spoken both languages since early childhood. All four had epilepsy and already had electrodes implanted in their brains as part of their medical treatment, giving researchers a rare, direct window into single-neuron activity.
The team recorded brain activity while participants listened, read, and conversed in both languages. To their surprise, only a small number of neurons in the hippocampus responded equally to the same word in both languages, such as "dog" and "perro." Individual neurons turned out to be largely dedicated to one language.
But the neurons did not act alone. They organized into groups that placed words on a meaning-based map, with conceptually similar words like "dog" and "wolf" landing near each other. Notably, this map was shared across languages. When researchers looked at the neural neighborhood around an English word, they could accurately predict where its Spanish translation equivalent would appear on the Spanish map. The two languages use distinct neural hardware to navigate one common conceptual space, which keeps them separate while allowing smooth switching.
The team also noted that this hippocampal structure closely mirrors large multilingual AI models such as mBERT, which map more than 100 languages using shared conceptual spaces.
Why it matters
This study is the first to examine bilingual processing at the level of individual neurons in real time, and it suggests the human brain may be structurally ready to adopt multiple languages. Once you build a base framework of word relationships, that framework can be projected onto new languages without rebuilding your understanding of the world from scratch. For anyone learning a second language, that means you are not starting over. You are adding a new route to concepts you already hold. The shared map may also help explain why bilinguals can blend languages or borrow words so naturally.
