When two people share a physical space and a mutual focus, their hearts may start to beat in sync — and scientists can now measure that alignment outside the lab.
The research
Hanlu He and colleagues tracked 72 students visiting New York City for an audio engineering competition. The participants wore Garmin wristbands to record heart rate, hearing aids that captured ambient noise, and mobile phones that logged GPS location. By stitching these streams into one timeline, the team could tell exactly when two people were within 20 meters of each other and what they were hearing at that moment.
The results, published in PNAS Nexus, showed that heart rate synchrony was stronger when participants were physically close, especially during joint attention — for example, sitting together and listening to the same lecture. People who already knew each other before the trip had significantly higher baseline synchrony. Chaotic, noisy listening conditions fractured the link, suggesting that straining to hear drains cognitive resources that would otherwise support social connection.
Interpersonal physiological synchrony, the authors conclude, emerges in naturalistic settings and can serve as a reliable marker of real-world social engagement. The 20-meter proximity spike, the joint attention driver, the familiarity multiplier, and the noise fracture together paint a picture of connection as a measurable biological event.
