Crows Can Do Statistical Reasoning: What It Reveals About Human Math Smarts

Statistically savvy crows are flipping the script on what we thought about animal intelligence—and what it means for our own brains.

The Research

In a study that blurs the line between human and animal cognition, animal researcher Andreas Nieder from the University of Tübingen and his team trained crows to peck at images on a screen to earn rewards. But these weren't simple choices. The birds were presented with two options: one with a higher probability of reward but a smaller payoff, and another with lower probability but a larger reward. Remarkably, the crows consistently picked the statistically more favorable option, even when the odds required careful evaluation.

The study, published in 2024 in Current Biology, involved two carrion crows (Corvus corone). After training, the birds made choices across hundreds of trials, and their performance was significantly above chance. For example, when choosing between a 70% chance of receiving 3 food pellets versus a 30% chance of receiving 6, they favored the former 80% of the time, showing they integrated both probability and reward magnitude—a hallmark of statistical reasoning.

This builds on earlier work from Nieder's lab showing that crows can count, understand the concept of zero, and even process numerical sequences. Together, these findings suggest that complex numerical abilities may not be unique to primates.

Why It Matters

What does a bird's prowess with probability have to do with your brain?
