A new longitudinal study reveals that following a Mediterranean diet is linked to higher psychological well-being in people over 50, including greater autonomy, purpose, and self-realization. The benefits were independent of income or education, and the diet acted as a buffer against emotional decline during the COVID-19 pandemic.
What the Research Found
Researchers from University College London and ISGlobal analysed data from 3,296 adults aged 50 to 90 in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Dietary habits were assessed in 2018–2019, and psychological well-being was measured up to two times between 2018 and 2020. High adherence to the Mediterranean diet predicted better scores on measures of autonomy, control, pleasure, and self-realization. These results held even after controlling for socioeconomic status and depressive symptoms.
The study, published in BMJ Open, also captured the emotional impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. While well-being declined overall after lockdowns, those who closely followed the Mediterranean diet experienced a much smaller drop. The researchers suggest that nutrients like polyphenols, omega-3s, and fibre may reduce inflammation, support gut health, and regulate stress responses.
Why Your Brain Benefits
This isn't just about avoiding depression—it's about enhancing what makes life worth living: a sense of purpose, control over your decisions, and personal growth. The study shows that what you eat can directly impact these core dimensions of well-being, regardless of your bank account. For anyone over 50, this is a practical way to protect mental resilience and emotional health.
What You Can Do
Start by adding more fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, and olive oil to your meals. Reduce processed meats and refined sugars. Even small changes, like swapping butter for olive oil or having a piece of fruit for dessert, can move you toward the Mediterranean pattern.
