The Research
Scientists from the University of Kaiserslautern-Landau and Japan's Kindai University, led by Ko Watanabe, set out to explore whether eye-tracking data could distinguish between tasks primarily handled by the left hemisphere (like language and arithmetic) versus the right hemisphere (like drawing and music perception). Their study, posted on arXiv in April 2026, involved 30 participants who performed four types of tasks while their eye movements were recorded.
The researchers used a machine learning model that analyzed pupil diameter and fixation duration to predict which hemisphere was dominant. The model achieved a classification accuracy of 89.4% (F1 score), significantly above chance. This suggests that ocular metrics are reliable indicators of lateralized brain activity.
