Ever woken up more tired than when you went to bed? A new study reveals a metabolic paradox during REM sleep: while the brain's blood supply and fuel increase, the energy currency inside neurons drops, leaving you feeling exhausted after vivid dreams.
The Research
Researchers at Tohoku University, led by Professor Ko Matsui, investigated brain energy metabolism during sleep. They used a transparent skull preparation in mice to observe the brain in real time with wide-field fluorescence imaging. The team tracked blood volume as an indicator of fuel delivery, astrocytic pyruvate as a metabolic intermediate, and ATP (adenosine triphosphate) inside neurons—the molecule that powers cellular work.
Published in Communications Biology on July 27, 2026, the study found that about 50 seconds before REM sleep onset, blood volume begins to rise in the posterior cortex and spreads forward, suggesting a wave of metabolic preparation. After REM begins, astrocytic pyruvate also increases, indicating enhanced glucose utilization. However, despite this increased supply, neuronal ATP levels decline sharply during REM sleep.
The researchers propose that the energy demand from intense memory consolidation and synaptic reorganization during dreaming exceeds the brain's ability to replenish ATP. They also observed that during non-REM sleep, subtle theta-band activity predicts blood volume changes several seconds later, showing tight neurovascular coupling.
