Time-Restricted Eating Boosts Cognition in Older Women

Restricting daily eating to an 8 to 9 hour window may enhance cognitive function in older adults, especially spatial planning and problem-solving, according to a pilot clinical trial presented at NUTRITION 2026.

The Research

Led by Sue Shapses, PhD, RD, of Rutgers University, the six-month study enrolled 47 women aged 50 to 79 who were overweight or obese—a group at higher risk for cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease. All participants cut 500 calories daily and lost about 15 pounds on average. However, 26 women also restricted eating to an average window of 8.2 hours per day (typically 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.), stopping food at least 4 hours before sleep, while the control group ate within a 12.3-hour window.

After six months, the time-restricted group showed significant improvements on tests of spatial planning and problem-solving compared to controls. They also trended toward fewer errors on memory and learning tasks, though no differences were seen in multitasking or reaction time. “Losing weight alone wards off some aging-related cognitive decline,” said Shapses, “but these data suggest additional benefits from restricting eating to 8-9 hours per day.”

Why It Matters

This study hints that aligning eating with circadian rhythms may protect executive function and spatial memory—important for daily activities like navigating routes or making plans. For older adults, especially women with overweight, combining caloric restriction with a shorter eating window could offer a simple, non-drug strategy to support brain health.
