Just thinking about mom can literally sync your brain with hers—even if she's not the one on the other end of the video call. A new study from researchers in China reveals that when toddlers believe they're cooperating with their mother, their brain waves align more closely with their adult partner, regardless of who that partner actually is. This finding highlights how our inner mental models of attachment can shape real-time social interactions at the neural level.
The Research
The study, led by Ruxin Su and colleagues from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and other institutions, involved 40 child-mother-stranger trios. The children, aged 3–4, played a remote cooperation game while wearing EEG caps. The clever twist: the researchers manipulated the children's belief about who they were playing with. In some trials, children were told they were playing with their mother, but the partner was actually a stranger (and vice versa). This 'Remote Partner-Belief Manipulation' isolated the effect of attachment representations from the actual person.
Results showed that when children believed they were playing with their mother—regardless of the actual partner—brain-to-brain synchrony between the child and their adult partner significantly increased. This effect was concentrated over the child's right temporoparietal junction, specifically at the P4 electrode, an area associated with social cognition and attachment. Moreover, the strength of this synchrony correlated with the child's attachment security (measured by standard assessments) and with faster reaction times when the child thought they were with mom.
Published in June 2026 on arXiv, the study provides the first experimental evidence that attachment representations—the internalized mental models of our caregivers—are an independent, endogenous driver of interbrain synchrony during live interaction.
