Kids Read Human Eyes but Not Robot Gaze

Children as young as three can read a person's intentions and preferences by looking into their eyes, but they fail to do the same for a humanoid robot, according to a new study from Italian and Japanese researchers.

The Research

The study, published in the International Journal of Child-Computer Interaction, was coordinated by Professor Antonella Marchetti of the Department of Psychology at Università Cattolica and CERITOM, in collaboration with colleagues from Tokyo and Osaka, as well as Davide Massaro, Cinzia Di Dio, and Federico Manzi from Università Cattolica of Milan.

Researchers tested Italian children aged 3 to 5 years old. They showed each child either a person or a humanoid robot looking at a specific object, then asked the child to infer which object the agent "preferred." The results were clear: children consistently interpreted the human's gaze as a signal of preference, but when the robot stared at the same object, the children did not attribute a psychological preference to it.

This finding suggests that the ability to read intent from gaze is deeply social and may not automatically extend to artificial agents. The study also found that regardless of whether the gaze came from a human or robot, it did not change the children's own personal preferences.

Why It Matters

These findings have important implications for the design of AI and robots that interact with children. Simply mimicking human eye movements is not enough to create a sense of communication or understanding. For children to attribute mental states like intentions to robots, the interaction must be richer—including words, gestures, reciprocity, and shared context.

"Just programming a robotic artifact to imitate an isolated human signal like eye movement is not enough to make it communicative to a child," Professor Marchetti noted.

This research also highlights a broader point about human cognition: our ability to read minds through subtle cues is a sophisticated social skill that may be uniquely tuned to human faces.

What You Can Do

While you might not interact with robots daily, you can strengthen your own social cognition by practicing active observation. When talking to someone, consciously note their gaze direction, facial expressions, and body language. Try to infer what they might be thinking or feeling. This type of practice can sharpen your theory of mind—your ability to understand that others have thoughts and desires different from your own.
