We used to think the brain had separate wiring for sensing warmth and coolness. A new study overturns that idea: a single population of nerve cells handles both, using a simple rate code.
The Research
Led by Drs. Phillip Bokiniec and Clarissa Whitmire at the Max Delbrück Center and Queensland Brain Institute, the team used two-photon microscopy to image hundreds of temperature-sensing neurons in the spinal ganglia of awake mice. They found that most of these cells are generalists: when cooled, they fire faster; when warmed, they slow their baseline firing. The TRPM8 ion channel, long labeled the "cold receptor," actually governs both responses. Blocking it wiped out the neural reaction to both cooling and warming.
Why It Matters
This rewires how we think about sensory processing. Instead of dedicated lines for hot and cold, the brain reads a single dial that increases or decreases its signal. This may explain why some people feel cold more intensely, or why certain nerve conditions distort temperature perception.
