Brain Noise Linked to Autism Communication Challenges

A new study from the University of Virginia shows that subtle patterns in brain electrical activity—previously dismissed as static—are linked to how well autistic children and adolescents communicate in everyday life.

The Research

The study, published in Scientific Reports in July 2026, analyzed high-density electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from over 300 children and adolescents while they listened to speech. Researchers isolated a metric called the aperiodic signal, which reflects the balance between neural excitation and inhibition. This background activity, long ignored, acts as a filter helping the brain separate meaningful sounds from internal noise. The team found that autistic participants with higher levels of neural noise had significantly lower scores on functional communication—the ability to use language fluidly in real-world social situations. Importantly, this metric was not related to vocabulary size or grammar knowledge, but specifically to practical communication fluency. The UVA team, led by neuroscientist Kevin Pelphrey, collaborated with institutions including Seattle Children’s Research Institute, the University of Washington, Yale, and UCLA.
