Neuroscience's 'Predictive Brain' Theory Echoes Freud, New Paper Finds

Modern neuroscience's leading model of how the brain works may be catching up to an idea Sigmund Freud proposed more than 130 years ago, according to a new paper published in the journal Entropy.

The Research

Researchers Erik Stånicke, Bendik Hovet, Line Indrevoll Stånicke and colleagues from the Department of Psychology at the University of Oslo compared two seemingly distant frameworks: the prediction paradigm in cognitive neuroscience and core concepts from psychoanalysis.

The prediction paradigm holds that the brain constantly generates expectations about what will happen next, then updates those expectations by comparing them with incoming sensory information. This process, scientists believe, shapes perception, behavior, and emotional regulation.

The Oslo team argues this is essentially the same mental phenomenon psychoanalysts have described at the subjective level for over a century. As Stånicke put it: "For over 130 years, psychoanalysis has developed psychological theories about how predictions take place at a subjective level, which cognitive neuropsychology is now studying at a physiological level."

One striking parallel involves projection — the psychoanalytic idea that we attribute our own feelings or expectations to others. The researchers link this to the brain's predictive machinery. "When we attribute qualities, intentions or feelings to other people, our brain shapes our experience of the world in line with established expectations," Stånicke said. This maps onto what neuroscientists call perceptual inference (changing our predictions) versus active inference (trying to make the world conform to them).

Both frameworks also describe the mind as seeking stability — a kind of psychological homeostasis. The brain reduces uncertainty by leaning on existing expectations, even when those expectations are poorly adapted. Stånicke notes that rigid symptoms like paranoid ideas or an internalized critical voice "may be stable but not very flexible prediction models." Someone who automatically expects criticism, for example, may interpret neutral situations through that filter even when reality doesn't warrant it.

This convergence isn't just academic. If persistent mental patterns are essentially inflexible predictions stored in procedural memory — not just conscious beliefs — it helps explain why lasting psychological change takes time and often requires new relational experiences, not just insight. It is an active prediction engine, and those predictions are shaped by your history.

What You Can Do

  • Notice your expectations. When you feel a strong emotional reaction, ask what prediction your brain made — and whether the evidence supports it.
  • Seek disconfirming experiences. Deliberately exposing yourself to situations that contradict habitual expectations can gradually update rigid predictions.
  • Practice perspective-taking. Reminding yourself that others have their own prediction models can soften automatic projections.
  • Be patient with change. Deeply ingrained patterns live in procedural memory and shift slowly — consistent practice matters more than one-time insights.
