Children's memory for a toy depends not just on how emotional that toy is, but also on the emotional tone of the toys shown before and after it, according to a new study.
The research
Researchers Henry Groves, Lucia F. Jackson, Barbara-Anne Robertson, and Jonte R. Hance tested how emotional valence—the positive or negative feeling a toy carries—influences order-dependent memory in children. They showed kids a sequence of emotionally-valenced toys and later asked them to recall which ones they had seen. The key finding: correct recall of any given toy depended not only on its own emotional charge but also on the valence of the toys that came immediately before and after it in the sequence.
Standard psychological models confirmed that order-dependence varies across the event, but their accuracy was low. They also failed to capture how memory for one emotional object influences memory for others in the set. To address this, the team built a classical tensor network model that factors in valence. This quantum-inspired approach achieved 77.98% accuracy in modelling the children's recognition memory—a massive improvement over standard models.
While the model is not strictly a "quantum cognition" framework, it demonstrates the power of quantum-like mathematics for describing order-dependent phenomena like emotional memory.
