A team led by Professor Yang Yuchao at Peking University, in collaboration with the Shanghai Institute of Microsystem and Information Technology, has developed the world’s first neuromorphic chip capable of matching the operational speed of the human brain. Published in Science, the chip uses phase-change memristors to perform calculations directly in memory, eliminating the data-shuttling bottleneck that slows conventional computers.
The Research
The chip is fabricated on a standard 40-nanometer process and occupies just 0.28 square millimeters. It operates at 50 MHz with nine pipeline stages per integration step, processing continuous neural dynamics in less than 10 milliseconds—matching the native temporal scale of brain activity. In tests, the chip achieved a 478.18× speedup over an enterprise-grade NVIDIA A100 GPU when reconstructing 3D cortical surfaces (mapping white and gray matter folds). Compared to state-of-the-art ASICs, it ran 3.82× to 36.27× faster while consuming 11.75× to 24.73× less energy. The resulting surface meshes were smooth, topologically accurate, and scored highly on metrics like Average Symmetric Surface Distance and Hausdorff Distance.
Why It Matters
Real-time brain modeling is critical for brain-computer interfaces, intraoperative surgical navigation, and studying neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Until now, such tasks required minutes of offline computation. This chip brings millisecond-scale, high-fidelity reconstruction closer to practical use, potentially allowing surgeons to see brain structure during operations or enabling digital brain twins that track neural changes in real time.
