A new study published in PLOS One reveals that when mothers take longer to respond vocally to their 12-month-old babies, the child is more likely to develop attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or disruptive behavior disorders by age 7.
What the Research Found
Researchers led by Bethany Stanley at the University of Glasgow analyzed audio recordings of 158 mother-infant pairs from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). They measured how quickly mothers responded within one second to their baby's vocalizations during a picture-book session. Among these children, 55 received a psychiatric diagnosis by age 7, while 103 were matched controls.
The results were striking: for every 10% increase in the probability of a maternal vocal response within one second, the child's odds of being diagnosed with any psychiatric disorder dropped by 17% (OR 0.83, 95% CI: 0.71–0.95). Specifically, ADHD risk decreased by 21% (OR 0.79, 95% CI: 0.63–0.99) and disruptive behavior disorder risk by 20% (OR 0.80, 95% CI: 0.67–0.94). Importantly, no link was found with autism or emotional disorders like anxiety or depression.

Co-author Professor Phil Wilson cautions that slow responses don't cause these conditions; they may reflect shared genetic traits or environmental stressors.
