For the first time, scientists have assembled a complete, gapless genome of the common marmoset, a small monkey that naturally develops age-related cognitive decline. The Research
Researchers at the University of California, Santa Cruz, led by Ph.D. student Prajna Hebbar and Professor Benedict Paten, worked with the Telomere-to-Telomere (T2T) Consortium to sequence the marmoset genome from end to end. They then compared this reference to population genomic data from 230 individual marmosets. This allowed them to map high-quality sequences for 76 genes known to be associated with Alzheimer's and Parkinson's in humans, and they discovered novel transcript variants of PSEN1, a gene strongly linked to early-onset familial Alzheimer's disease.
The study also completely resolved the Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC), a complex immune region that has been difficult to sequence in other primates. Additionally, they found that marmosets have a unique pattern of ribosomal DNA shuffling, with sex-specific distribution, which could have implications for understanding genome evolution.
