New Large-Scale Dataset Maps Dorsal Stream Visual Processing in Primates

For years, scientists have used AI models to mimic how the primate brain recognizes objects—the so-called ventral visual stream. But the dorsal stream, which handles motion and spatial awareness, has lagged behind due to a lack of large-scale neural data. Now, a team led by Ethan B. Trepka and colleagues at Stanford and collaborating institutions has released STSBench, a dataset that captures activity from over 2,000 single neurons in the superior temporal sulcus (STS) of rhesus macaques watching natural videos. This nearly 50-fold increase over prior dorsal stream datasets opens the door to building more accurate computational models of how we perceive movement and location.

The researchers recorded neuronal responses while monkeys viewed thousands of unique, natural video clips, ensuring the data reflects real-world visual processing. They demonstrated that STSBench can be used to benchmark encoding models—algorithms that predict neural firing from visual input—and even to reconstruct what the animal saw from its brain activity alone. This work, accepted at NeurIPS 2025, represents a major step forward in understanding the dorsal stream's role in vision, complementing the well-studied ventral stream.
