BCI Neurofeedback Amplifies Brainwaves to Boost Error Detection

A new study demonstrates that non-invasive brain-computer interface (BCI) training can accelerate perceptual learning by directly amplifying the brain's own error-detection signal, the Error Positivity (Pe) wave.

The Research

Researchers from Wiley, publishing in Advanced Science in July 2026, tested whether real-time feedback of brain electrical activity could improve people's ability to spot subtle visuo-motor errors. Participants used a joystick to guide a cursor toward a target along a straight line, while researchers randomly introduced tiny rotations in the cursor's path. Traditional behavioral training—where participants were told whether they made an error—failed to improve detection of the smallest rotations.

The BCI group, however, received feedback tied directly to their brainwaves. Electroencephalogram (EEG) monitored the Error Positivity (Pe) signal, a positive brainwave that occurs when someone becomes consciously aware of an error. When the Pe wave fired after an error, the BCI showed a visual confirmation on screen. Over five days, the amplitude of the Pe wave grew steadily, and the BCI group became dramatically better at detecting the tiny rotations, outperforming the behavioral group. Advanced EEG source localization revealed that this learning was driven by improved coordination between frontal executive networks and parietal visuospatial networks.
