Can a healthy diet fully reverse cognitive damage from years of junk food? A systematic review and meta-analysis reveals that while improving nutrition helps memory, recovery is incomplete—especially when added sugar is involved.
The Research
Researchers at the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) analyzed data from 27 preclinical controlled experiments, published in Nutritional Neuroscience on May 18, 2026. They examined how memory function changed when rodents on high-fat or high-sugar diets were switched back to healthy food. The team, led by Dr. Simone Rehn and senior author Dr. Mike Kendig, focused on memory but also assessed anxiety, activity, and food motivation.
Results: Animals switched to a healthy diet did better on memory tasks than those that stayed on junk food. But, as Dr. Rehn said, “Memory did not return to the level seen in animals that had never eaten an unhealthy diet.” Recovery depended on diet composition: high-fat diets showed some recovery, but high-sugar or combined high-fat/high-sugar diets showed almost none. These deficits specifically affected the hippocampus, the brain region for learning and memory, which also regulates appetite.
The meta-analysis found no consistent improvements for anxiety, activity, or food motivation, indicating the damage is isolated to memory circuits.
Why It Matters
Many assume that switching to a healthy diet will undo all harm, but this study suggests sugar may create lasting structural changes in the hippocampus. Even after weeks of healthy eating, memory deficits persist—especially if added sugar was part of the diet.
The findings highlight the need to limit added sugar, not just fat, for brain health. They also emphasize that early dietary habits matter, as recovery may be limited.
