Thinking Longer Leads to Worse Decisions

In complex strategic decisions, thinking longer might actually make your choices worse. A new study of professional chess players reveals a surprising paradox: when the objective difficulty of a problem is held constant, faster decisions are, on average, of higher quality.

The Research

Published in the journal PNAS, the study was conducted by researchers from LMU, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and UniDistance Suisse, including behavioral economist Uwe Sunde. They analyzed data from professional chess tournaments, looking at individual moves and the time players spent on them. To measure decision quality objectively, they compared each move against benchmarks from top-tier chess engines—powerful computer programs that can evaluate the best possible move in any position.

The key finding: faster moves were associated with higher decision quality, even after accounting for the computational complexity of the board, the distinctiveness of alternative moves, and overall time pressure. Taking more time to think was correlated with worse outcomes. The researchers suggest that longer deliberation often reflects a subjective perception of difficulty, indicating that the player has hit a cognitive boundary. When intuition fails to grasp a situation immediately, the human brain struggles to compute rationally, leading to diminishing returns and more errors.

This isn't just about chess. The phenomenon likely applies to any high-stakes, complex decision-making environment—from business strategy to emergency response. The study challenges the common assumption that more time always leads to better decisions. Instead, it highlights the power of intuitive, rapid decision-making. It also suggests that when you find yourself deliberating excessively, it might be a sign that you're dealing with a problem that exceeds your current cognitive capacity, and further rational analysis may not help.
