Eye Contact Syncs Infant Brains for Language Learning

Eye contact between infants and adult speakers does more than just connect them emotionally—it synchronizes their brainwaves and directly enables language acquisition, according to a new study published in Nature Communications.

The Research

Professor Victoria Leong from the University of Cambridge and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) Singapore led a cross-cultural experiment with 42 infants aged 8 to 10 months in the UK and Singapore. The infants listened to three nonsense languages formed from repeated syllable triplets. Each language was paired with a video of the same speaker wearing glasses that were either clear, partially shaded, or fully opaque, obscuring her eyes to varying degrees.

Using electroencephalography (EEG), the researchers measured the infants’ brainwave patterns and compared them with the speaker’s pre-recorded brainwaves. The key finding: infants only learned the language paired with the clear glasses—when they could see the speaker’s eyes. The level of inter-brain neural synchrony between the infant and speaker predicted language retention more strongly than the infant’s own brain activity alone.

“We let the infants listen to all three languages and it turned out they were selective in what they learned. They’re not just passive sponges,” said Professor Leong. The results were consistent across both UK and Singapore cohorts, suggesting this mechanism is universal across cultures.

Why It Matters

This study reveals that social signals—specifically eye contact—act as a gate for cognitive processing in the developing brain. It explains how infants manage to focus on relevant information from a sea of stimuli. For adults, it underscores the importance of non-verbal cues in communication and learning. Inter-brain synchrony may be a key component of effective teaching and social bonding at any age.

While this research focuses on infants, the principle of social gating applies broadly. When learning something new, try to engage with a live instructor or use video where the speaker’s eyes are clearly visible. Minimize distractions and make sure you have clear visual access to the person you’re learning from. Your brain may synchronize more effectively, boosting retention.
