Can Brain Stimulation Boost Working Memory? New Meta-Analysis Weighs In

Can a gentle electrical current applied to the brain make your working memory sharper? A recent meta-analysis suggests that combining transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) with cognitive training can improve working memory performance—but the benefits are modest and don't necessarily transfer to other cognitive tasks.

The Research

Researchers from the University of Sydney and collaborators conducted a systematic review and robust variance meta-analysis, pooling data from 24 randomized controlled trials involving 1,156 healthy adults. They examined the effects of tDCS combined with working memory training compared to sham (placebo) stimulation. The findings, published in Frontiers in Psychology, revealed a small but significant improvement in trained working memory tasks (Hedges' g = 0.24, p < 0.01). However, no significant transfer effects were found for untrained tasks, such as fluid intelligence or attention, suggesting that gains are specific to the trained context.

The study also explored moderators like stimulation parameters and training duration, but none significantly altered the overall effect—meaning that tDCS doesn't work uniformly for everyone, and individual differences may play a role.

Why It Matters

Working memory is a cornerstone of everyday cognitive function—it helps you remember a phone number just long enough to dial it, follow multi-step instructions, and juggle multiple tasks. While tDCS is not yet a proven enhancement tool for healthy individuals, this research highlights the potential of combining brain stimulation with cognitive training (a method known as 'closed-loop' training) to amplify benefits. For the average person, it's a reminder that cognitive enhancement is a complex interplay of technique, training, and biology—not a magic switch.

What You Can Do

Before rushing to buy a tDCS device, know that this is early-stage research. More robust, long-term studies are needed. Instead, focus on evidence-based methods to improve your working memory: practice a dual n-back task, engage in regular aerobic exercise, and get sufficient sleep. These have stronger backing and no side effects.
