A new study proposes that human overconfidence persists because its decision-making costs act like a peacock's tail: a costly signal that credibly reveals underlying ability. And to keep this bold signaling from being fatal, evolution paired it with loss aversion—an internal handbrake.

The Research

Researchers at the University of Bath and the London School of Economics, led by behavioral economist Professor Chris Dawson, published findings in Psychological Review (August 2026). They argue that overconfidence, while causing costly mistakes, is not an evolutionary flaw but a handicap signal. The key is that costs are not equal: high-ability individuals make fewer and less damaging errors when overconfident, making inflated self-belief cheaper for them. This differential cost prevents low-ability individuals from faking confidence without severe penalties, keeping overconfidence an honest indicator of capability.

Building on Robert Trivers' self-deception theory, the study explains why observers don't discount confident claims as 'cheap talk': the potential costs make the signal costly, hence credible. The authors also identify loss aversion as a co-evolved safeguard, allowing people to project status publicly while acting cautiously privately. This helps explain gender differences: men's higher average overconfidence may have evolved to signal status and resource-acquisition ability during sexual selection.
