Adolescents with blood markers indicating dysfunctional lipid metabolism tend to have slower brain processing speed, according to a new study.
The Research
Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland analyzed blood samples and cognitive test results from 251 teenagers aged 15 to 17. They looked for markers of abnormal lipid metabolism, such as high triglycerides and low HDL cholesterol, and correlated these with performance on tests measuring processing speed and other cognitive functions.
The findings, published in Neuroscience News, showed a direct association: poorer lipid profiles were linked to slower processing speed, even after adjusting for factors like body mass index, physical activity, and parental education. The study's lead researcher, Dr. Eero Haapala, emphasized that these effects were evident before any signs of cardiovascular disease, indicating that vascular and metabolic health affect brain function from an early age.
The study is part of the Physical Activity and Nutrition in Children (PANIC) study, which has tracked participants' health and lifestyle factors over time. The researchers used a comprehensive blood panel and a battery of cognitive tests, providing robust evidence for the link.
