New research reveals that the medial prefrontal cortex, often considered the brain's 'executive,' can actually block creative problem-solving by enforcing default habits. Silencing it helped mice adopt a smarter strategy much faster.
The Research
Scientists at Emory University, led by Robert Liu, published a study in Science Advances on August 8, 2026, showing that the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) can prevent mice from switching to a more efficient strategy. The team used a naturalistic pup-retrieval task in a T-maze, where female mice had to find and retrieve pups. Unstressed mice naturally used a 'win-stay' strategy—returning to where they last found a pup—rather than using an auditory cue that indicated the pup's new location.
When the researchers chemogenetically silenced the mPFC, the mice shifted to the sound-guided strategy in just 2-3 days, compared to 4-8 days for control mice. This shows that the mPFC was actively blocking the adoption of a better strategy. In contrast, silencing the auditory cortex impaired the ability to use the sound cue, leaving mice stuck in the default strategy.
Why It Matters
This challenges the traditional view that the prefrontal cortex is always the master of flexible thinking. It suggests that sometimes, 'thinking outside the box' requires suppressing the very brain region that usually helps us plan and decide. This insight could help explain why some people with conditions like autism, where the mPFC may be overactive, might excel at creative tasks that require ignoring default assumptions. It also opens new possibilities for therapies, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), to temporarily modulate mPFC activity and enhance cognitive flexibility.

While you can't silence your mPFC with a switch, you can practice stepping back from automatic habits. When facing a problem, deliberately ask: 'Is there a better way?' Try to set aside what worked before and focus on current cues. Engaging in mindfulness or problem-solving games that require flexible thinking can also help train your brain to overcome mental ruts.
