Predicting Brain States: How Laya's JEPA Approach Improves EEG Analysis

Imagine a tool that reads your brain's electrical whispers and can tell when a seizure is about to happen—that's the promise of a new EEG model called Laya.

The Research

Researchers at UCLA, led by Saarang Panchavati, introduced Laya, the first EEG foundation model based on JEPA (Joint Embedding Predictive Architectures). Unlike traditional models that reconstruct raw signals, Laya predicts latent representations—capturing brain activity's 'meaning' rather than just its raw patterns. In their arXiv preprint (March 2026), the team tested Laya against models using masked autoencoders (MAE) on 12 clinical tasks, including seizure detection. Under frozen linear probing—where the model isn't fine-tuned—Laya achieved the highest mean accuracy, with notable gains on tasks where subtle neural patterns are easily obscured by artifacts like eye blinks or muscle noise. Through controlled ablations, they confirmed that the pretraining objective, not architecture or data, drove these improvements.
