Placebo pills can boost memory, physical performance, and reduce stress in older adults — even when the person knows they are taking a fake pill. That is the key finding from a new study published in the International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology.
The Research
Researchers from Università Cattolica in Milan, led by Diletta Barbiani, Alessandro Antonietti, and Francesco Pagnini, recruited 90 healthy older adults and split them into three groups. One group received no treatment. Another group got placebo pills but were told the pills contained active ingredients to improve well-being. The third group got the same inactive pills but were told openly that they were placebos that could still trigger beneficial mind-body responses.
After three weeks, both placebo groups showed improvements, but the open-label placebo group (those who knew the pills were fake) had the most surprising results. They experienced lower stress levels than the deceptive placebo group and the control group. They also showed significant improvements in short-term memory. Physical performance increased by 9.2% in the open-label group (vs. 7% in the deceptive group). Cognitive performance improved by 6.9% to 21.5% depending on the test.

These results suggest that the mind plays a powerful role in aging. Simply expecting improvement can trigger real changes in the brain and body. This opens up ethical, low-cost ways to support healthy aging without relying on drugs or supplements. The open-label approach removes the ethical concerns of deception while still delivering benefits.
