Mice don't just stumble around hoping to see better — they actively plan their movements to gather the most useful visual information, according to new research from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL).
The Research
Scientists led by Professor Mackenzie Weygandt Mathis at EPFL built a custom virtual reality arena that projected a 3D scene based on each mouse’s head and body position in real time. They trained mice to distinguish between a white teardrop target and a black teardrop distractor, then introduced virtual walls that occluded up to 90% of the objects, leaving only a narrow central gap visible.
When the objects were heavily hidden, mice didn’t guess randomly. Instead, they dynamically adjusted their behavior: they walked closer to the screen to widen their viewing angle, slowed their pace, followed winding paths, and even reversed direction mid-trial based on new visual evidence. The team observed these information-seeking strategies scaling continuously across five levels of occlusion. Remarkably, the behavior appeared immediately upon first exposure to the obstacles, suggesting an innate cognitive model of spatial physics rather than a learned habit. The study, published in Current Biology, confirms that mice — despite vision roughly seven to eight times worse than humans and lacking a fovea — use a sophisticated active sensing strategy called infotaxis.
