Chronic stress, loneliness, and relentless social comparison may stem from a structural mismatch between brains evolved for small face-to-face groups and today's hyper-connected, screen-mediated world, according to a new review published in Behavioral Sciences.

Dr Jose Yong, Senior Lecturer at James Cook University Singapore, and Dr Sarah Chan, Research Fellow at the Lee Kuan Yew Centre for Innovative Cities at SUTD, co-authored the review titled Evolutionary mismatch, stress, and competition: Making sense of psychosocial problems in the polycrisis era. Rather than presenting new experimental data, the paper synthesizes existing evidence on how ancestral social instincts function when transplanted into modern environments.
The authors describe evolutionary mismatch as the friction that occurs when instincts shaped for one environment are forced to operate in a very different one. Humans evolved in small, close-knit groups where status, trust, and belonging were read through familiar faces and everyday signals. Now, those same instincts are triggered in dense cities, on digital platforms, and within unequal societies shaped by overlapping pressures.
Social media makes the mismatch especially visible. The urge to understand one's place within a group once helped maintain cooperation among familiar people. Today, that instinct is bombarded by an endless stream of curated lives, achievements, and artificial status metrics. The review identifies heightened perception of social competition as the primary psychological pathway linking evolutionary mismatch to immune and emotional burnout. The mind is repeatedly tricked into believing it is being judged, outpaced, or left behind by faceless competitors.
A central thesis is that the human brain cannot naturally distinguish between a direct threat from a rival in a local group of roughly 150 people and a curated image of a stranger broadcast across a global network. The authors argue that modern public health approaches must stop placing the entire burden of recovery on individual resilience, noting that asking someone to "cope" through mindfulness while embedded in a system engineered to exploit ancestral vulnerabilities is biologically counterproductive.
