How disordered your brain's electrical signals are could reveal whether you're conscious or unconscious, according to new research. Scientists found that a measure called permutation entropy, applied to EEG phase dynamics, can reliably distinguish between conscious and unconscious brain states, and also between eyes-open and eyes-closed conditions.
The Research
Researchers from Korea and the USA analyzed EEG signals from two datasets: a general anesthesia protocol (measuring consciousness levels) and resting-state recordings from healthy controls and individuals with inattentive-type ADHD. Instead of raw EEG, they focused on the principal mode of phase dynamics—reflecting anterior-posterior information flow—and quantified disorder using permutation entropy.
They found that permutation entropy distributions depended on brain state. In conscious states, inattentive-type ADHD, and eyes-closed conditions, mean permutation entropy was lower and standard deviation larger. When they trained classification models using permutation entropy as a feature, they could reliably distinguish conscious vs. unconscious states in the anesthesia dataset, and could also distinguish eyes-open vs. eyes-closed conditions. However, classification between healthy controls and inattentive-type ADHD patients was not clear, suggesting that ordinal pattern analysis may miss critical information in the raw signal for ADHD detection.
Why It Matters
This study highlights the potential of permutation entropy as a simple, robust marker for consciousness. It could aid in monitoring anesthesia depth, detecting altered states of consciousness, or even assessing brain health. The limitation with ADHD shows that no single measure is sufficient—complex conditions may require multiple analytical approaches.
