The Research

The results, published in the journal Neuroscience News, showed a clear duration-dependent effect: flies confined for just 10 minutes showed no suppression, while those trapped for 30 or 60 minutes exhibited reduced mating drive. Notably, flies confined for 7 or 24 hours remained in a suppressed state for at least five days, independent of appetite or movement.
To uncover the molecular mechanism, the team manipulated dopamine levels in the flies. They discovered that disabling dopamine had no effect on whether the flies initially shut down courtship, but it dramatically altered how long the suppression persisted. By mapping the brain, they identified specific dopamine receptors in the mushroom body—a region involved in sensory processing and learning—that are essential for sustaining the long-term behavioral block.
'Dopamine doesn't dictate whether the behavior is shut down; it governs how long the shut-down lasts,' explains Professor Sakai. 'This gives us a concrete biological target for understanding trauma-induced sexual dysfunction in higher organisms.'
