New EEG research shows the human brain can briefly follow two conversations at once—holding onto the first speaker while starting to listen to a second.
The research
Scientists at Trinity College Dublin, led by Professor Giovanni Di Liberto of the School of Computer Science and Statistics, the Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience (TCIN), and the ADAPT Research Ireland Centre, measured brain activity while participants listened to two people speaking simultaneously against crowd noise. Using electroencephalography (EEG), they tracked how the brain shifted attention between the two voices.
Published in PLOS Biology, the study found that during a switch, the brain does not instantly drop the first speaker. Instead, it enters a one-to-two-second "dual tracking" window in which both speech streams are modeled at the same time. This overlap produced a distinct, reproducible neural signature on the EEG that appeared only during conversational handoffs.
"The brain starts engaging with the new speaker before it has fully disengaged from the first," the researchers report. This capacity varied significantly between individuals, which may explain why some people naturally navigate noisy social spaces better than others.
Why it matters
These findings challenge the long-held view that we can only focus on one speaker at a time. The dual-tracking buffer may be why you can discreetly monitor a side conversation or catch an airport announcement without losing the thread of your current chat. But when that buffer is strained—in loud restaurants, open offices, or large family gatherings—the continuous effort to separate competing signals can trigger cognitive fatigue, especially for older adults or people with hearing difficulties. Understanding this mechanism could also inform smarter hearing aids that support natural soundscape exploration rather than simply amplifying one voice.
