Spontaneous brain activity—often dismissed as background noise—may contain hidden structure that artificial intelligence can use to decode what someone is perceiving. A new study shows that self-supervised learning can extract meaningful perceptual information from hours of resting-state neural data, offering a promising path for improving brain-computer interfaces.
The research
Led by Aleksandr Kovalev and collaborators at multiple institutions, the team recorded 14.6 hours of spontaneous multiunit activity from an intracortical array implanted in the primary visual cortex (V1) of a blind participant. They pretrained a masked autoencoder—a type of AI that learns to fill in missing data—on this unlabeled resting-state data without any task or stimulation. Remarkably, the model's internal representations spontaneously captured V1's spatial organization and could separate different perceptual states, even though it never saw labeled examples during training. To assess practical value, they applied linear probing: a logistic regression classifier on the frozen latent representations. On a general psychometric task, perception decoding accuracy reached 84.1%. On a more difficult threshold-level task, accuracy hit 64.0%.
Why it matters
These results challenge the notion that spontaneous cortical activity is mere noise. Instead, it contains rich, task-relevant structure that self-supervised learning can leverage. For clinical neuroprosthetics, this could be a breakthrough: rather than relying on scarce labeled perception trials, researchers can now tap into abundant spontaneous recordings to boost decoding performance.
