Our Scientific Methodology

IQgenio's assessment is built on three pillars of modern psychometrics — each representing decades of research and validation in the field of cognitive science and intelligence measurement.

CHC Theory (Cattell-Horn-Carroll)

The Cattell-Horn-Carroll Theory is the most comprehensive and empirically supported model of human intelligence. It emerged from John B. Carroll's landmark 1993 meta-analysis of over 460 cognitive datasets, combined with the earlier work of Raymond Cattell and John Horn on fluid and crystallized intelligence. CHC Theory identifies a hierarchical structure of cognitive abilities: narrow abilities at the base, broad abilities (such as Fluid Reasoning, Crystallized Intelligence, and Processing Speed) in the middle, and a general factor (g) at the top. Our test measures 7 broad CHC abilities, giving you a detailed cognitive profile rather than a single number.

CAT — Computerized Adaptive Testing

Computerized Adaptive Testing is a testing methodology where the difficulty of each question is dynamically adjusted based on your previous responses. If you answer correctly, the next question becomes harder; if you answer incorrectly, it becomes easier. This approach converges on your true ability level more efficiently than traditional fixed-length tests — achieving greater accuracy with fewer questions. CAT is the standard methodology used in major standardized assessments worldwide, including the GRE, GMAT, NCLEX, and many clinical psychological assessments. Our implementation ensures that each test-taker receives a uniquely tailored experience optimized for precision.

IRT — Item Response Theory

Item Response Theory is the statistical framework that powers our scoring algorithm. Unlike classical test theory (which simply counts correct answers), IRT models the probability of a correct response as a function of both the person's ability and the item's characteristics (difficulty, discrimination, and guessing parameters). This means that answering a hard question correctly contributes more to your estimated ability than answering an easy one. IRT produces a latent trait estimate (theta) that is then converted to the familiar IQ scale with a mean of 100 and standard deviation of 15. This approach yields more precise, fair, and comparable scores across different test sessions and formats.

The 7 Cognitive Domains We Measure

Based on CHC Theory, our IQ test evaluates seven broad cognitive abilities. Each domain represents a distinct aspect of intelligence, and together they form a comprehensive cognitive profile.

Fluid Reasoning (Gf)

Logical thinking, pattern identification, and solving novel problems without prior knowledge.

🧠

Working Memory (Gwm)

Holding and manipulating information in mind simultaneously for complex reasoning.

Processing Speed (Gs)

Speed and efficiency of processing simple information and making cognitive decisions.

🔲

Visual-Spatial (Gv)

Visualizing, rotating, and reasoning about spatial relationships and geometric concepts.

📚

Crystallized Intelligence (Gc)

Accumulated knowledge, vocabulary, and verbal reasoning acquired through experience.

🔢

Quantitative Reasoning (Gq)

Frequently Asked Questions

Are online IQ tests accurate?
Online IQ tests vary widely in quality. Many are entertainment quizzes with no scientific basis. IQgenio uses Computerized Adaptive Testing (CAT), Item Response Theory (IRT), and is grounded in CHC Theory — the gold standard in cognitive science. While not a substitute for a clinical assessment administered by a psychologist, our test provides a reliable estimate of cognitive abilities across 7 domains, with accuracy within ±5 IQ points for the Standard 30-question format.
Is this IQ test really free?
Yes, completely free. There is no premium version, no paywall for results, no in-app purchases, and no email or signup required. You can take the test as many times as you like and receive full results every time — including your overall IQ score, percentile ranking, and individual scores across all 7 cognitive domains.
Can you improve your IQ?
Yes, to a degree. While genetics play a significant role in baseline intelligence, neuroplasticity allows the brain to strengthen through targeted exercise. Research shows that working memory training, learning new skills, physical exercise, adequate sleep, and consistent cognitive challenge can improve specific cognitive abilities. Our brain training program targets the same 6 cognitive categories measured by our IQ test.
Do brain games really work?
Research findings are mixed but generally positive for well-designed cognitive training. Studies show that targeted brain exercises can improve performance in the specific domains being trained (near transfer). Evidence for far transfer — improvements in untrained abilities — is more limited but growing. The key factors are consistency (15-20 minutes daily), progressive difficulty, and variety across multiple cognitive domains.
How often should I train my brain?
For optimal results, we recommend 15-20 minutes of daily cognitive training. Consistency matters more than duration — a short daily session is significantly more effective than occasional long sessions. Our brain training program includes 306 levels across 6 categories, providing months of progressive challenge.
What is CAT (Computerized Adaptive Testing)?
CAT is a testing methodology where question difficulty adjusts in real-time based on your responses. When you answer correctly, the next question becomes harder; when you answer incorrectly, it becomes easier. This process converges on your true ability level more efficiently than traditional fixed-length tests. CAT is used in major standardized assessments worldwide, including the GRE, GMAT, and many clinical IQ tests.
What is CHC Theory?
The Cattell-Horn-Carroll (CHC) Theory is the most widely accepted and empirically supported model of human intelligence. Developed through decades of research culminating in John B. Carroll's landmark 1993 meta-analysis of over 460 datasets, CHC Theory identifies multiple layers of cognitive abilities — from narrow specific skills to broad abilities like Fluid Reasoning and Crystallized Intelligence, all contributing to a general factor (g). IQgenio measures 7 broad CHC abilities.
How is IQ calculated?
Your IQ is calculated using Item Response Theory (IRT), which considers both the number of correct answers and the difficulty level of each question. The adaptive algorithm estimates your ability parameter (theta), which is then converted to the standard IQ scale where 100 is the population mean and 15 is the standard deviation. Domain-specific scores are calculated separately for each of the 7 cognitive areas, and a composite score represents your overall IQ.
What is the difference between an IQ test and brain training?
An IQ test is a measurement tool — it assesses your current cognitive abilities at a point in time and produces a standardized score. Brain training is an exercise program — it aims to improve your cognitive abilities through repeated, progressive practice. Think of it like the difference between a fitness test and a workout routine. We offer both: take the IQ test to establish your baseline, then use brain training to strengthen specific areas.
How does IQgenio compare to Mensa?
Mensa uses professionally administered IQ tests (such as the Wechsler or Stanford-Binet) with a cutoff at the 98th percentile (IQ 130+). IQgenio is an online assessment that uses similar scientific principles (CAT, IRT, CHC Theory) but is not a clinical diagnostic tool. Our test can give you a reliable estimate of whether you might qualify for Mensa, but official Mensa membership requires taking their supervised test. If you score 130+ on IQgenio, we encourage you to contact your local Mensa chapter for an official evaluation.
